What is a “referral” for Early Intervention?

Early Intervention and Service Coordination are assistance programs that are funded and sponsored by the state of South Carolina.
Remember, you get to choose your Early Intervention provider if approved. Want to work with us? Just ask for About Play!

It all starts with an Early Intervention Referral TO BABYNET OR DDSN

A “referral” happens when your child (age 0–5) is experiencing a developmental delay or a disability. The referral is the first step to begin determining whether your child could benefit from Early Intervention and other professional therapies.

Infants and toddlers from birth to five years may be eligible for BabyNet or DDSN services if they are developing more slowly. To become eligible, you’ll need to follow very specific instructions. Below, we’ll walk you through the whole process, start-to-finish.
Anyone can make a referral for early intervention at any time. It can be you, a doctor, a grandparent, daycare, teacher, or friend.
But remember - the referral does not guarantee that you are eligible to receive services. Referrals are just the first step of the process. Eligibility comes next.
If your child is age 0–2,
referrals go to BabyNet.
If your child is age 3–5,
referrals go to DDSN.
