The History Of Our Company

Laura McCraw’s and Willie Jean Stokes’ journey to founding About Play is a testament to the power of complementary strengths, shared goals, and enduring friendship in the pursuit of making a significant impact in the field of early intervention. Their story began in 2007 in Columbia, S.C., when Laura hired Willie as an early interventionist in a company specializing in early intervention. Willie’s rapid mastery of her role and responsibilities led to her promotion to supervisor, a position that allowed her and Laura to work closely together. Over the years, they discovered their opposite strengths but aligned goals and work ethic, which forged a strong friendship anchored in their mutual passion for positively affecting the lives of children and their families.

Despite going their separate ways professionally for a time, with Laura focusing on building an ABA program on the autism side and Willie expanding her role as an early intervention supervisor in another company, their commitment to their shared vision never wavered. Willie harbored a dream of starting a company dedicated to early intervention that prioritized children and their families above all, a vision that Laura gradually came to share.

After months of persuasion and planning, reflecting on their unique yet complementary qualities and shared objectives, they decided to take a bold step. In 2014, they founded About Play, a culmination of their experiences, dreams, and dedication to early intervention. About Play has since flourished as a company since then, growing to over 100+ staff members and serving more than 1800 children across 42 counties in South Carolina. About Play’s success story underscores the importance of collaboration, vision, and the relentless pursuit of a dream, serving as an inspiring model for entrepreneurial ventures in the healthcare and educational sectors.
